ENVIRONMENTAL & CLIMATE JUSTICE FUTURES:
SCREEN INDUSTRIES, CULTURE & SOCIAL CHANGE

SESSION 2: ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION
BEYOND PRODUCTION: ENVIRONMENTAL GOOD PRACTICE IN SCREEN EXHIBITION AND ARCHIVES

2.10-3.10PM, FRIDAY 26TH APRIL 2024, THE ENTERPRISE CENTRE, UEA

At the same time as engaging change, the arts and culture sectors are also attending to their own environmental sustainability. In the screen sector, initiatives by national organisations including BAFTA albert, Julie’s Bicycle and the British Film Institute are leading positive impact through education, tools such as carbon calculators, certification, partnerships and collaboration. This focus began in production but is now broadening to consider the circulation and access to content (distribution and exhibition) and preservation and reuse of content (archives).

Panellists:

Farah Ahmed, Climate Justice Lead, Julie’s Bicycle

Keir Powell-Lewis, Head of Sustainable Film Fund, British Film Institute

Angela Graham, Head of Archive Services, East Anglian Film Archive

Alec Plowman, Lecturer in Media Production, University of East Anglia

Farah Ahmed is the Climate Justice Lead at Julie’s Bicycle. She supports the curation of events and the Creative Climate Justice programme, developing resources, training and advocacy, connecting environmental, racial and social justice, and creative activism. Her interest lies in how art can centre stories and solutions from the frontlines of climate impacts, and how we can imagine and enact decolonial and anti-capitalist ways of being.

Keir Powell-Lewis is the Head of the Sustainable Screen Fund at the British Film Institute. They have been leading on the BFI’s evaluation work since they joined the organisation’s Research & Statistics Unit in September 202 and developed the environmental sustainability strategies for Screen Culture 2033, the BFI’s 10-year plan that led to the creation of the Sustainable Screen Fund.

Angela Graham is Head of Archive Services at the East Anglia Film Archive since 2014. She has over 20 years’ experience in museums and archives including director roles in independent museums in both Norfolk and Cheshire.
